Camarilla Club

Capoeira Club

Description:

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art/dance/game, heavily rooted in rhythm, music, and movement. The CMU Capoeira Club provides an opportunity to learn, practice, and play for capoeiristas of any skill level or for people who are simply interested in learning more. Classes are taught by students (for now) with at least 4 years experience playing Capoeira. Classes are fun, free, open to everyone, and a great workout, too!

Carnegie Mellon Solar Splash

Description:

Carnegie Mellon Solar Splash is a organization whose goal is to assemble a team to represent Carnegie Mellon University in Solar Splash, The World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar Boating. For this competition different schools will design and build a solar powered boat to compete in three different events, Slalom, Sprint and Endurance. The Slalom is a short maneuverability test, the Sprint is a 300m dash, and the Endurance challenge is the marquee event where all boats attempt to make as many laps around a 2km loop as they can in a 2 hour time period.

Carnegie Tech Radio Club

W3VC is the FCC assigned callsign of the Carnegie Tech Radio Club. The radio club is an organization of people interested in all the activities amateur radio has to offer. Our membership consists of undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff of the CMU community. Among the club members there is a wide variety of interests such as public service events, satellite communications, DXing (talking to other amateurs around the world), computers and networks, amateur television, and emergency drills.

Our members democratically vote and choose projects of individual interest so that our community service projects are personal and have character. And we always remember to have fun! However, many of our larger projects can only be undertaken if several members agree to commit. Meetings are held every other week, short, and we try to feed you.

Many American colleges and universities, including UC Berkley and Berklee College of Music, now offer courses on DJing. A number of schools have also been founded, such as New York¬タルs Scratch Academy, specifically to teach this new artform. CMU has no such program, or plans for a program. The goal of the CMU Turntable Crew is filling this absence by creating a community of student DJs to learn, collaborate, teach, and spread appreciation of DJing and DJ culture. We are interested in working with other Hip Hop oriented student organizations such as The International Freestylers, and 5th Element to organize events and activities for our members, and the CMU Community. We also hope to spread the presence and appreciation of urban youth culture on campus.

cmuTV exists to provide both an informational and creative outlet for the campus community, and to act as an agent able to provide video services to other groups on the Carnegie Mellon campus. cmuTV is broadcast on campus channel 17 to all dorms and academic buildings on campus. Channel 17 is also mirrored online for the rest of the campus community. Members of cmuTV have the ability to create content of their choosing ranging from comedy and art to news and information. We will strive to provide coverage of important events on campus, including concerts, sports, speakers, and of course buggy. As a media outlet on campus, we will represent the views and interests of the student body, and will be open to content reflecting and comprised of these views. Channel 17 can also serve as an outlet for other clubs, student organizations, and academic departments to showcase any performances or projects that they may be exhibiting. The computer club offers the opportunity to tinker with unique hardware, promote open source development and advocacy, and hack on interesting programming projects, all while offering a variety of useful services to the campus community. Among other services, we run the contributed webserver (supporting CGI scripts and SQL database access), a USENET server, and an open source FTP mirror. Counterpoint, founded in 2000, currently has 13 active members and does not discriminate based on ethnicity, creed, faith, orientation, or gender: it is open for anyone to get involved, through advertisements, choosing songs, arranging music, coordinating performances and the like. Vocal performance is open exclusively to women. Any active member can present nearly any piece of music to the rest of the group to perform. Counterpoint currently performs pop-music, oldies, and classical pieces, and a few members are preparing some original pieces as well.
