Glossary

Abeyance - when a sanction is held in abeyance, it is suspended pending the completion of other outcomes or violations

Adjudicator - a university official that helps to resolve violations of community standards

Character witness - a person who may not necessarily have direct knowledge about an incident but can speak to another persons general character

Complainant - the person(s) or group bringing allegations forward or initiating a complaint

Deliberation - when the board members weigh the facts and arguments in order to render a recommendation for decision

Jurisdiction - the territory within which authority may be exercised

Mediation - a process that allows two parties with a discrepancy to come to an agreement for resolution

Respondent - the person(s) or group alleged to have violated community standards

Staff - an administrator employed by the university

Summary actions - sanctions that are imposed in an informal way

Subpoena - a court order that requires the submission of information. Failure to provide it may lead to penalties

Witness - a person that has direct knowledge about a particular issue or can provide important perspective on the incident in question
