Emergencies
happen, and many times the RA is the first on the scene. As an Emergency
Responder, you are expected to be familiar with the following guidelines
for action during an emergency. Remember that these are merely guidelines.
Each emergency situation is different, and you must always use your best
judgment. Do not, under any circumstances, risk personal injury, and always
call for additional help.

If
you see a fire:
Put
the fire out with a proper fire extinguisher, if you can do so without
personal risk or
Activate
the nearest fire alarm and evacuate.
Using
a fire extinguisher:
No
attempt should be made to extinguish large spreading fires.
If
you come across such a fire, begin evacuating the building.
For
small fires:

Get
extinguisher

Twist
and Pull out locking pin

Spray
in a side to side motion across the base of the flames, at a distance of
8-12 feet
-
Wait
a moment to be sure that the flames to do not reappear
Evacuation
Procedures:

Close
all windows
-
Take
your keys
-
Turn
on lights
-
Close
fire doors behind you
-
Move
quickly, but do not run
-
Use
stairs instead of elevators
-
Help
others find their way
-
Move
away from the building
Re-enter
building only after it is determined safe to do so by the ranking
fire department officer at the scene
If
your hall or building fire-fighting equipment needs maintenance, call the
housing office at x8-8700.
GAS,
STEAM, OR WATER LEAK
Shut
off leak at its source, if you can safely do so without unnecessary personal
risk.
Ventilate
area immediately if combustible or flammable gases are involved.
Do
not turn any electrically energized switches (lights, appliances, etc)
on or off, and do not activate the fire alarm system if energized components
of the system are located in the vicinity of a combustible gas leak.
ELECTRICAL
If
broken power lines or shorting current is involved, immediately clear the
area and call Campus Police at x8-2323.
During
power outages, refrain from using open flames of any kind.

SIMPLE
FIRST AID
Always
wear gloves when dealing with bleeding or blood in saliva or vomit.
Always
wash your hands after using the gloves and dispose of the gloves properly.
If
gloves are not available, avoid all contact. with the above bodily fluids.
Serious
Falls
Refrain
from moving the person. Instead, encourage the person to lie still to avoid
further injury, and wait until medical help arrives. Do not assume that
a bone is not broken even if the person is able to move the injured part.
Severe
Bleeding
Apply
direct pressure to the wound using many layers of clean cloth with the
palm of the hand or flatly with the fingers. Do not use fingertips. If
the injury is on an arm or leg, elevation may be used in addition to direct
pressure. If there is an impaled object, do not remove. Instead, cover
and clean and seek medical help.
Asthma
Attack
Check
if person used medication (oral/inhaler). Keep person in sitting position.
Seek medical attention if the person is still having difficulty breathing
after 2-5 minutes.
Alcohol
or Drug Overdose
Maintain
person's airway. Turn the person on his/her side if vomiting may occur.
Call Campus Police for transportation to a medical facility. Follow up
with the person in a few days and engage them in a discussion about his
or her use of alcohol and/or drugs.
Fever
over 101°
Seek
medical attention. For fever under 101°, drink fluids, rest and take
some Tylenol ever 3-4 hours. If fever persists, seek medical attention
Frostbite
Immerse
body part in warm water, if skin is red and then white. Wrap body part
in blankets, if skin is stinging. Seek emergency care, if skin is waxy
or numb.
Head
Injury
Watch
for excessive drowsiness. Call ambulance if victim is unconscious, if fluid
is seen, or if neck or back injury is suspected.
Fainting
Lower
the person's head between the knees, or lie the person flat with his/her
feet elevated. Gently shake the person and shout, "Are you OK?" Person
usually recovers quickly.
Allergic
Reaction to a Bee/Wasp Sting
Seek
emergency care immediately if there is a spreading rash, hives, difficulty
breathing or a tightness in throat or chest.
Seizure
Keep
calm. Restrain person's movement ONLY if necessary to protect from injury.
Maintain the person's airway, but do not force anything into the person's
mouth.
Insulin
Shock
Give
juice or other form of sugar, if person is conscious. If unconscious, get
immediate medical help.
Burns
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree
Rinse
with cold water. Clean with mild soap and apply clean dressing, for 1st
and 2nd degree burns. Seek medical attention for 2nd and 3rd degree burns.
If
any emergency requires clean up, contact the Housing Office at (8-2139)
to disinfect the area.
