The Steelers football team won “one for the thumb” in 2006
Steelers Football
Pittsburgh’s professional football team, the Steelers, is notable as the first team in football history to win five Super Bowls. The club is seventy years old and was originally called “The Pirates.” In 1940 it was renamed in homage to Pittsburgh’s heritage as a steel town. The team plays in the brand new Heinz field, located on the North Shore at 100 Art Rooney Avenue, 15212. The ticket office number is: 412-323-1200.
Pirates Baseball
The Pirates, Pittsburgh’s professional baseball team, was originally established in 1887 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. After being renamed the Pirates (in 1889) they began to play on the north shore of the Allegheny River in Exposition Park. It was here that the first World Series game in Pittsburgh history was played in 1903 against the Boston Americans. One hundred years later, the Pirates continue to play on the North Shore, but now in the brand new PNC Park, 115 Federal Street. Pittsburgh claims famous players such as Roberto Clemente and Honus Wagner. Go to a game on a fireworks night the display is quite impressive.
Penguins Hockey
In the fall of 1967 the Pittsburgh Penguins were created. The Penguins won two Stanley cups consecutively in 1991 and 1992. They play, as they always have, in the downtown Mellon Arena.
