Phase IV: Group Interviews

Based on the information obtained from your written materials and the initial interest interview, you will be invited to participate in a group interview with one of the following four like-house types:

  • First Year Houses (Boss / McGill, Donner, E-Tower, Hamerschlag, Mudge, Scobell, Stever)
  • Mixed-Class Suites (Morewood Gardens, Welch / Henderson, West Wing / Resnik)
  • On-Campus Apartments (Doherty, The Intersection)
  • Oakland Apartment Communities

The group interviews will occur on Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31, 2009. Each 45-minute interview will consist of a group of 6-8 applicants participating together in an exercise that will generate discussion related to the RA role in that specific type of housing. For example, the applicants may be given a case study to discuss and respond to, or may be asked to roleplay an RA staff meeting. The actual exercise that is used will be determined by the Housefellows for that house-type.

The purpose of the group interview is to hear your thoughts, perspectives and ideas relative to the RA role in that house-type. It is also designed to gauge how you might interact with other people on the job, since much of the work RAs do is done in group settings. Finally, the group interview should help you learn more about what the RA position looks like specifically in that type of house community. The Housefellows and Community Advisors present at the group interview will leave time for applicants to ask questions about that house type.

You will only be invited to participate in one group interview. While your candidacy from that point forward will be primarily considered by the houses in that like-house type, please know that your candidacy will still be broadly available to and potentially considered by all houses.

In order to schedule your group interview, you will follow the instructions in an email to your Andrew account that you should receive on Tuesday morning, January 27, 2009. Because of the quick turnaround between that email and the actual interviews, it is imperative that you be on the lookout for that email and follow the instructions contained in it as soon as possible.

For questions or concerns about the group interview, please contact Angie Lusk via email or in the Student Development Office at (412) 268-9510. In particular, please contact her if you anticipate not being available at all on January 30 or 31 so that she can schedule you for a makeup group interview.
