How are the students supervised in student housing?
Resident Pre-College students live in Morewood Gardens and Morewood Gardens E-Tower residence halls. Student rooms are organized into single-gender floor sections, each with an assigned counselor. The Pre-College Counselors are supervised by the Assistant Directors, all of whom live in Morewood Gardens with the students. The Counselors and Assistant Directors are current Carnegie Mellon undergraduates who have undergone thorough training programs to provide academic, social and personal support for their residents. This staff is supervised by the Program Director of Pre-College Student Life, Susie Sheldon. Susie is a full-time staff in the Student Life Office. All residential staff and the Director of Pre-College Student Life are based in the Pre-College Student Life Office in Morewood Gardens.
What are the Campus Security Guidelines?
We are always interested in protecting our students and their personal possessions. The following are a few suggestions from the Carnegie Mellon University Police Department:
- In an emergency, call Campu Police immediately 412-268-2323 or Morewood Front Desk 412-268-2080.
- If you believe anyone is in need of help at any time, call Campus Police immediately 412-268-2323 (Emergency and Non-Emergency)
- Report all crimes, personal injuries and accidents immediately to Campus Police. Campus Police also provides emergency first aid assistance.
- Report persons who you may feel are unauthorized on campus.
- Report losses as soon as possible even if you feel the possibility of recovery is remote.
- Report losses of keys immediately.
- Report conditions you feel may be a fire or safety hazard.
- Students are responsible for their own personal property. Carnegie Mellon cannot accept responsibility for personal property of students or student groups. In order to avoid any unnecessary concern, students are strongly advised not to bring items of value to campus. Doors are to be kept locked at all times the student is not present for the students' protection.
- Make it a practice to: lock your room, keep room keys securely stored, take your purse or wallet with you, keep valuables with you, walk in well-lit areas after dark, try to be in the company of others whenever possible. Better yet - ride the Shuttle and Escort systems after dark.
Absence from Campus
My child will be staying overnight with nearby Friends/Family during the summer OR he/she needs to come home for a weekend, how do I inform the program?
Students who will be away from campus overnight or for an extended leave must have a document signed by the student's parent or guardian granting permission for the absence. The Absence From Campus Release Form must be on file with the Student Life Office (Fax 412-268-4999) at least 24 hours in advance of the student's departure from campus, the time/date of the departure from campus, the time/date of return to campus, and the name, contat information and age of the adult who will be accompanying the student during the absence. "Blanket permission statements, which do not indicate specific dates and times of departure and return will not be accepted. Students will not be permitted to leave campus for an overnight stay unless picked up by a parent, guardian or other adult over the age of 21. Students must check out at the Morewood Front Desk with that adult prior to their departure.Curfew and Sign-in
What is the Curfew/Sign-in policy for Pre-College students and how does it work?
Curfew: All students must be physically present inside Morewood Gardens at all times between the hours of 11pm and 6:30am Sunday-Thursday and 12midnight on Friday and Saturday evenings. Any student found outdoors or in another hall during these hours will be subject to immediate disciplinary action. After curfew, students are required to be on their assigned floor.
Sign-In: Nightly sign-in begins at 8pm directly inside the security door in Morewood. Once a student has signed in for the night, he/she will not be permitted to leave the Pre-College residential area. Violations of this policy may result in the installation of strict curfew procedures for the remainder of the program or expulsion from the program.
Students and parents must understand that the practice of signing-in and maintaining curfew helps to ensure student safety.
