Carnegie Mellon Awards & Scholarships
These awards are offered by or coordinated through Carnegie Mellon and some are available specifically to Carnegie Mellon students. Read the descriptions carefully; some awards are restricted to undergraduates only, or graduating seniors and graduate students, etc.
The Brona Stein Buerger (MM '62) Memorial Enrichment Fund provides one or two annual scholarships of $2,000 each to H&SS, BHA, or SHS students from any class or major. The funds MUST be used toward a semester or full year of study in an accredited education abroad program and may be applied toward tuition, room and board, airfare to the country, or course material expenses.
Hannah Estermann Bergman Travel Fund
The fund was created in honor of Hannah Estermann Bergman (MM '46). Preference is given to undergraduate students in Modern Languages who wish to study in Spain. The award is for $1,000.
Alumni Travel Scholarship
Multiple scholarships of up to $1000 are awarded each year to H&SS, BHA, and SHS students to be used toward a semester or full year of study in an accredited education abroad program. Current sophomores and juniors will receive preference. The funds are provided by H&SS Alumni.
Department of Modern Languages Study Abroad Scholarships
The Department of Modern Languages offers a $2,000 award for semester or year long programs and a $500 award for summer programs. This award is for majors, double majors or self-defined majors in Modern Languages. The award may be applied toward tuition, room and board, airfare to the country or course material expenses for any accredited study abroad program. Selected candidates will be interviewed by faculty members in the department. The interview will be conducted in the foreign language with other committee members present to observe and ask questions in English. The deadline for applications is March 2.
Freeman-ASIA (Freeman Awards for Study in Asia) is designed to support American undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study overseas in East or Southeast Asia. This award offers $3,000-$7,000 for undergraduate students to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia during the Spring, Summer, or Fall semesters. Scholarships are given to graduating seniors and graduate students (up to completion of a PhD). The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government's premier study abroad scholarship program. It enables U.S students and artists to benefit from unique resources in every corner of the world. U.S. citizens can gain international competence in an increasingly interdependent world. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Up to $5,000 is available to students in any field who have already been accepted to a study abroad program for the fall semester, who are receiving a Federal Pell Grant. Gindroz Travel/Study Prize
The fund was created by the Marylin and Ray Gindroz Foundation to enhance education through travel in Europe and the study of traditional architecture, urbanism, and music. The $5,000 stipend is available to 3rd or 4th year students in the Architecture department, 3rd year students in the Music department, and 1st year graduate students in Architecture or Music. Jack Wilson Fund Scholarship
The fund provides financial assistance for innovative, international opportunities that foster an appreciation for and better understanding of different cultures. Priority will be given to ideas that promote peace and community development. Students must have completed at least 3 years of undergraduate work or be enrolled in a graduate program, and they must demonstrate financial need. For more information, contact Judy Zang at x8-1969.
Marilyn Meltzer Prize Award in Design
This award is open to all full-time, rising juniors in Design. The award commemorates Marilyn Meltzer’s lifelong interests by honoring a student who has shown an ability to combine outstanding design with effective use of color. One student will be chosen to receive an amount of $2,500 towards academic year or summer study abroad. For more information please contact Melissa Cicozi .
Mary Ellen Cranell Naylor Study Abroad Award
This award was created as a tribute to Mrs. Naylor’s strong interest in language and travel. The award is for Carnegie Mellon students who wish to immerse themselves in the culture of a European country and who receive a Carnegie Mellon undergraduate grant. National Security Education Program Scholarships
NSEP offers scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate and graduate students for study in non-Western countries. Although the grants are merit -based, the amount granted will vary from partial to full cost of participation depending on financial need. For additional information contact Judy Zang at x8-1969.
Scholarships for study, work, volunteer, research, or special projects abroad during academic break periods including the summer, winter break and spring break. Funds are not available for students in their final semester of study. A maximum of 1/3 of the total expenses or $2000 (whichever greater) may be covered by grants. Money is provided by the cohesive Carnegie Mellon fund which includes financial support from the dean of student affairs, the vice provost for education, college deans and OIE. Vira I. Heinz Scholarship Program for Women in Global Leadership
This $5000 scholarship is open to any female student currently in her sophomore year who would like to study abroad in the summer between her sophomore and junior year. Participants in the scholarship program will develop intercultural awareness, leadership skills, and a commitment to serving others. Participants will attend 2 leadership retreats in the spring semester before going abroad. Applications are due on November 3, 2008. An information session will be held in September. It is advisable to begin the process at that time or earlier as the application is lengthy. Interviews will be scheduled in late November and the selection of 3 winners will be made upon completion of the interviews.
