RE: J-1 Regulations Correction
Dear CMU community members,
Today the Department of State published a correction to the J rule published late last month that will extend the J Research Scholar and Professor categories to a five year limit. The indication that people in F status would be subject to the 12 month bar has been removed. F students and dependents can continue to change to J status without any additional limits such as those that were proposed in the new J rule.
Please note that the effective date, when scholars will be able to extend their stay to 5 years, is not yet known. Because of the changes to SEVIS necessary for implementation of this rule, OIE has been advised that the rule will not become effective before October 1, 2005.
Questions and comments may be directed to OIE.
Sincerely,
OIE Staff
