Subject: 29 month OPT - final interim rule PENDING
Dear F-1 Students,
As many of you know, the US government has publicized a final interim rule which will allow for…
1. 29 months of optional practical training for F-1 students in SOME fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) under certain circumstances, and
2. All students with OPT who have pending H-1B petitions with change of status requests to automatically extend their OPT (legal stay AND work authorization) to October 1.
The US government and the SEVIS administrators have not created the business rules or infrastructure to support the implementation of the new interim rule. Until they do and the rule becomes effective, OIE can not begin to recommend or authorize the additional period of OPT.
As always, OIE staff will investigate fully the new rule and its practical implications. We appreciate the urgency that many of our students will have and we share that urgency. As soon as our analysis is complete AND the business practices are available and ready, OIE will broadly announce the new process by email and by posting to the “news” section of the OIE website. Please stay tuned for additional details.
Regards,
Lisa Krieg, Director
and the OIE Staff
