OIE Services
Required Check In With OIE
New J-1 scholars are required to check in with the OIE by attending OIE's New Scholar Orientation sessions held each week on Thursday, from 1:00 - 2:00 PM, Warner Hall, 3rd floor. Call OIE at 412/268-5231 for more information or to schedule attendance. Bring the passport with I-94 and DS-2019 to the meeting.
For employees who have been in the US for a long time or for scholars who have been in J-1 status at CMU before, an individual meeting with a Foreign Scholar Advisor is an alternative to the Orientation meeting on Thursday.
Employees should visit OIE shortly after arrival by attending the Orientation or meeting individually with an Advisor.
Scholars who fail to check in with the OIE will be considered to be in invalid (illegal) non-immigrant status 30 days after entry to the US.
Other OIE Services
A Foreign Scholar Advisor is available at the OIE to assist J-1 scholars and J-2 dependants with issues related to non-immigrant documents and status, cultural adjustment, and practical matters. To schedule an appointment to meet with an Advisor, call the OIE receptionist at 412-268-5231.
