Arriving At Carnegie Mellon
Once you've arrived on campus, use the Settling In Guide checklist of things to do in your first few days to ease your transition to Pittsburgh. More information about these issues will be provided at the scholar orientation.
Transportation to Campus from the Airport
Carnegie Mellon is located in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, approximately 20 miles from the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport. There is a public bus service (PATransit, Bus #28X) directly from the airport to the Carnegie Mellon campus. The bus departs from the lower level of the airport. The final stop the bus makes is in front of Morewood Gardens Residence Hall on the Carnegie Mellon campus. Please visit the PAT website for more information.
|#28X BUS SCHEDULE & COST
|Monday to Sunday
||5:55 am to 12:00 am departing every 20-30 minute
|Children (6 to 11)
|Children (5 & under)
Drivers do not carry change, so be prepared with exact change when boarding the bus (in small bills and coins). The trip takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on the time of day. Taxi service from the airport is also available at all times and will cost about $50 to Oakland. The taxi should be metered and a tip of 10-15% of the cost on the meter is normally expected.
Scheduling for Scholar Orientation
The Office of International Education (OIE), located on the 3rd floor of Warner Hall, hosts an orientation and immigration check-in for new scholars every Thursday from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. Within the first week of your arrival, call the OIE receptionist at 412-268-5231 to make an appointment for this orientation and confirm the location of the orientation. This is a required meeting for scholars in J-1 immigration status and is recommended for all new scholars.
The orientation sessions are intended to assist visiting scholars in J, H, F-1 Optional Practical Training, and other immigration/visa categories. Be sure to bring your passport, visa, I-94 departure card and DS-2019 form or any other immigration paperwork with you. Spouses are also welcome. Details on the regular time and location follow:

New scholars and visitors find the orientation session to be helpful. In addition to immigration and visa matters, we also discuss practical matters such as the social security number application, health and health insurance, housing, banking, transportation, etc. During orientation we also complete the immigration check-in that is required for all new scholars in J-1 status.
