F-1 Practical Training
Each year, Carnegie Mellon University welcomes new employees who are F-1 students on curricular or optional practical training either prior to or after graduation. In some cases, these employees are former Carnegie Mellon students and in many cases, employees are graduates of other US institutions.
F-1 students on practical training are encouraged to attend OIE's weekly New Scholar Orientation sessions held each week on Thursday, from 1:00 - 2:00 PM. Call the OIE at 412/268-5231 for more information or to schedule attendance. These new arrivals should bring their passport with I-94, I-20, and EAD card to the meeting.
OIE provides general support and assistance to F-1 students on practical training working at the institution. For students who were CMU students, OIE will continue to sign the I-20 and provide other F-1 support as before. Students from other institutions will need to contact their home institution regarding policies and procedures. Many F-1 students in practical training consult with an Advisor in the OIE regarding the change of status to H1B.
For specific information on how to obtain work authorization, Carnegie Mellon students should explore the student employment portion of this OIE website or meet with an OIE Advisor.
