"So, what type of vegetarian are you?"
Vegetarians exclude animal products to varying degrees. The major types of vegetarians are:
Lacto-ovo-vegetarian
- A lacto-ovo-vegetarian eats foods from the soil, as well as eggs ("ovo") and dairy ("lacto") products. Animal flesh from meat, fish, and poultry is avoided, however.
- Most vegetarians in the United States of America are lacto-ovo-vegetarians.
Lacto-vegetarian
- A lacto-vegetarian eats foods from the soil and dairy products, like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Eggs, and animal flesh from meat, fish, and poultry are avoided.
Vegan (pronounced VEE gun)
- A vegan only eats food from the soil and strictly avoids all animal products including red meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
- Vegans also avoid products that may contain derivatives of animal products such as casein, lactose, etc. A vegan readsfood labels very carefully.
Meat restrictor
- A meat restrictor avoids red meat, but may eat fish and poultry.
- Meat restrictors are not vegetarians in the true sense of the word, but could be described as being on the road toward vegetarianism.
