Head Injuries
Head Injury Treatment Instructions
Head injuries, while not always serious, are not to be taken lightly. If a person sustains a blow to their head they should rest for at least 24 hours, and follow the instructions below. Seek medical attention immediately if neck or back injury is suspected.
- No strenuous activity for 24 hours.
- When laying down, the head should be slightly elevated.
- Ice should be used to relieve swelling, applying for 20 minutes every 3-4 hours for 24 hours.
- Tylenol may be taken as directed on bottle.
If any of the following symptoms occur, seek immediate medical assistance (signs of these symptoms may occur up to 72 hours following the injury):
- Loss of consciousness, confusion or excessive drowsiness.
- Severe headache or weakness or numbness of the arms or legs.
- Difficulty breathing, or clear fluid leaking from ears or nose.
- Blurred double vision, unequal pupils, difficulty awakening, nausea and vomiting.
If any of the above symptoms exist:
- Do not move victim
- Do not give food, drink or medicine by mouth.
- Call Campus Police at x82323 for transport to a hospital if you live on campus or are in a campus building. Otherwise call 911.
