Fractures

A fracture is an injury that disrupts the integrity of the bone resulting in chips, cracks or breaks in the bone.  A health care provider or an emergency room should evaluate fractures or suspected fractures.

Warning signs of fracture include:

  • significant deformity
  • significant bruising or swelling
  • inability to use the affected part
  • bone sticking out of a wound
  • coldness or numbness in the affected area
  • a snap or popping sound heard at the time of injury.

What to do:

  • Call for help.
    • Campus Police at x82323 if on campus or 911 if off campus
  • Do not move the injured part.
  • If available, place a blanket, pillow, board or rolled newspaper above and below the injured part to provide support and prevent movement.
  • Remain calm and reassuring for the injured person.
