Fractures
A fracture is an injury that disrupts the integrity of the bone resulting in chips, cracks or breaks in the bone. A health care provider or an emergency room should evaluate fractures or suspected fractures.
Warning signs of fracture include:
- significant deformity
- significant bruising or swelling
- inability to use the affected part
- bone sticking out of a wound
- coldness or numbness in the affected area
- a snap or popping sound heard at the time of injury.
What to do:
- Call for help.
- Campus Police at x82323 if on campus or 911 if off campus
- Do not move the injured part.
- If available, place a blanket, pillow, board or rolled newspaper above and below the injured part to provide support and prevent movement.
- Remain calm and reassuring for the injured person.
