You will receive a detailed schedule of events for Family Weekend as well as the schedule of programs for the International Festival when you arrive on campus. The schedule below lists highlights of the weekend. This is not the final schedule and is subject to change.

12:30pm – 2:00pm International Festival Keynote Lecture & Lunch: Dr. Jendayi Frazer
Rangos Ballroom, University Center

Dr. Jendayi E. Frazer is known worldwide as a policy leader and expert on African Affairs. She joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon in 2009 as Distinguished Service Professor with joint appointments in the Department of Social and Decision Sciences, and in the H. John Heinz College's Schools of Public Policy and Management. Her current research focuses on strengthening regional security cooperation and economic and political integration in Africa. She is also co-Directing Carnegie Mellon's new Center for International Politics and Innovation (CIPI) where she is particularly interested in utilizing technology and applying innovative solutions to core issues of development and governance in Africa.

9:00pm - Midnight International Festival Event- Cultural Fusion: A Multicultural Student Organization Late Night Event
Rangos Ballroom, University Center

Multicultural Student Organizations will combine their efforts to provide an evening showcasing performances, food, cultural nuances and dancing. Collectively, the organizations will demonstrate diplomacy in action on a local level as they bridge cultural gaps to provide a fusion of cultural exploration. Free of charge, all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

10:00am – 1:00pm International Festival Event- Global Volunteerism: Becoming a Global Citizen

Please stop by to participate in and learn from impact projects featuring service learning initiatives and global volunteerism. There will be numerous opportunities to engage as a global citizen, making impact both locally and globally. Amnesty International, Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force, Building New Hope, Global Links, Unite for Sight, American Red Cross and other service agencies and organizations will be providing interactive impact projects and information for those in attendance.

12:30pm – 1:30pm ‘A Conversation with Herb Simon’ – A Nobel Laureate Who Spent Half a Century at Carnegie Mellon

How does one find a career? What does it mean to be an expert? How does one become an expert in something? What is it like to win the Nobel Prize? These are the kinds of questions that college students around the world have asked as they enter young adulthood. And who better to ask than the world’s leading authority on the subject of decision-making? During the film interview, Herb Simon answers these and many other questions.

Relive Orientation 2009! Family members of freshmen will get to see how much fun the Class of 2013 had; family members of upper-class students will see how hard our Orientation and Resident Assistant student staffs worked to make Orientation so special.

3:00pm – 5:00pm International Festival Awards
McConomy Auditorium, University Center

The International Festival Awards recognizes individual students, student organizations and faculty members whose work contributes to the theme of the festival, What's Happening to Diplomacy? This event will highlight all of the excellent programs and research by Carnegie Mellon community members and offer grants to continue the theme of the International Festival throughout the academic year. In addition to the award and recognition presentations, Carnegie Mellon alumni will speak about their work surrounding the issues of diplomacy.
