WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN PHYSICS
Physicists . . .
- Conduct research on physical phenomena through systematic observations and experimentation.
- Use mathematical terms to describe the structure of the universe and the interaction of matter and energy.
- Develop theories and laws on the basis of their observations and experiments, and develop methods to apply these laws and theories of physics to industry, medicine and other fields.
- Develop and perform experiments with high tech equipment to observe the structure and properties of matter.
Specialties
Astronomers - Use the principles of physics and mathematics to answer questions about the
fundamental nature of the universe, such as its origin and history and the evolution of the solar system.
Biophysicists - Study the physical principles of living cells and organisms, their electrical and
mechanical energy, and related phenomena. They conduct research in such areas as seeing
and hearing and the transmission of electrical impulses along nerves and muscles.
Chemical Physicists - Conduct research on the relationship between molecular, chemical and
physical properties of substances and compounds.
Geophysicists - Study the physical aspects of the earth including measurement of seismic,
gravitational, electrical, thermal, and magnetic forces affecting the earth. They also investigate the origin and activity of glaciers, volcanoes, and earthquakes.
Health Physicists - Devise and direct research, training, and monitoring programs to protect plant
and laboratory personnel from radiation hazards. They also advise public authorities on methods of dealing with radiation hazards, and procedures to follow in radiation incidents.
Medical Physicists - Apply their knowledge and the methodology of the science of physics to
address problems related to the diagnosis and treatment of disease including radiation
treatment, laser surgery, the use of ultrasound and infrared for diagnoses, and bioelectrical
investigation of the brain and heart.
