WHAT CAN I DO WITH A DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS
Mathematicians
- Study and exploit the intrinsic properties of numbers.
- Invent and explore rules of relationship and the manipulation of symbols.
- Divide into two groups: pure/theoretical and applied.
- Construct models to forecast sales.
- Allocate services and resources in a firm or political unit.
- Calculate the strength, safety, and cost of designs for buildings and machines.
- Simulate complex devices such as nuclear reactors and spacecraft.
Specialties
Applied Mathematicians - Develop new theories and techniques for solving practical problems in
business, government, engineering, and the natural and social sciences. Work ranges from analysis of mathematical aspects of launching communications satellites to studies of the effects of drugs on disease.
Theoretical Mathematicians - Develop new principles and new relationships between existing
principles of mathematics.
Actuaries - Assemble and analyze data to calculate the probabilities of death, sickness, injury,
disability, unemployment, retirement and property loss from accident, theft, fire, and other
hazards. They use this information to help insurance companies determine the expected insurance loss.
Computer Applications Engineers - Formulate mathematical models of systems, and set up and
control computer systems to solve scientific and engineering problems.
Engineering Analysts - Conduct logical analysis of scientific, engineering, and other technical
problems and formulate mathematical models of problems to be solved by computers.
Operations Research Analysts - Conduct analyses of management and operational problems.
They analyze the problem in terms of management information and develop a program that provides a maximum probability of profit of effectiveness in relation to the cost or risk.
Psychometricians - Develop and apply procedures for measuring psychological variables.
Statisticians - Devise, carry out, and interpret numerical results of surveys and experiments. Apply
knowledge of statistical methods to a particular subject area such as economics, natural
sciences, or engineering.
