ETHICAL STANDARDS IN THE JOB SEARCH

These guidelines conform to accepted standards of conduct for job search candidates. Carnegie Mellon University enjoys a positive reputation among its employers, and we take pride in our students presenting themselves in a professional manner. If you plan to use the Career Center to secure employment, we expectyou to abide by its tenets. A student who violates these ethical standards will lose access to TartanTrak.

Present your qualifications and interests accurately.

Falsifying data, such as grade point average, date of graduation, institutions attended, majors and degrees, prior work experience, and eligibility to work in the United States , is unethical and with most employers is grounds for immediate dismissal.

Learn about the employer and their positions, and apply for positions only when genuinely interested.

Failure to research employers and positions prior to applying tells the employer that the student has little interest and reflects poorly on the Career Center and Carnegie Mellon University . Submitting resumes without researching the opportunity demonstrates a lack of respect for the employer.

Interview with the employer only when sincerely interested in the opportunity.

Interviewing for “practice” takes advantage of recruiters and limits interviewing opportunities for other students who may be interested in the positions being offered.

Participate in the interview.

Employers take the interview process seriously and expect students to honor their agreement to arrive on time and participate in the interview. “No Showing” or “Late Canceling” an interview reflects poorly on the candidate, fellow students and the institution.

Notify organizations of your acceptance or rejection of offers as soon as that decision is made and no later than the deadline designated by the employer.

Students should expect offers to be confirmed in writing and should notify the employer of their decision by telephone and with a courteous follow up letter or email. Requests for extensions of decision deadlines should be made as early as possible and not at the last minute.

Honor an accepted job offer as a contractual agreement.

Upon accepting a position, students should cancel any previously arranged interviews with other employers, withdraw from the campus interviewing program, and notify the Career Center of their decision. Continuing to interview after accepting an offer, or reneging on an accepted offer, is unethical.
