Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens: 1 Schenley Park

This Pittsburgh attraction is great for people of all ages. A gift to the city in 1893 by industrialist and philanthropist, Henry Phipps, it is one of the largest conservatories in the United States. It features both indoor and outdoor gardens, as well as educational classes and activities for children. The fall, spring and summer months are the high times for fascinating exhibits and events, including Butterflies, Jazz in the Garden, Salsa Sundays and the Fall Flower show. Exhibits change every season so you’ll want to visit Phipps more than once.

Right across the street from Phipps Conservatory sits the Schenley Park Visitor Center and one of many entrance points to Schenley Park. The third largest urban park in the east, Schenley Park boasts 456 acres of amenities including nature trails, tennis courts, playing fields, an ice rink, a swimming pool and an 18-hole public golf course. The visitor center, originally built in 1911 and recently restored, provides trail maps and restrooms and is a delightful place to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or a sandwich before exploring this oasis in the heart of the city.
