Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History: 4400 Forbes Avenue

There is no excuse for not visiting these two wonderful museums. They are close to campus, free with your Carnegie Mellon ID and impressive. The Museum of Art features eclectic collections of both American and foreign art, including pieces by Degas, Monet, O’Keefe and Warhol. The permanent collection also includes a unique chair display, with chairs representing nine distinct architectural styles, including chairs designed by famous architects Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. With great temporary exhibitions rotating through, there is always something new to see.

The Natural History Museum is more oriented towards children, but offers interesting and educational exhibits for adults as well. This museum houses multiple dinosaurs and wildlife exhibits, but most astounding is the vast array of minerals and gems. This beautiful collection is elegantly displayed. From darkened caves designed to accentuate phosphorescence to mirror lined rooms that create the sensation of being immersed in an interminable sea of jewels, the minerals and gems exhibit is breathtaking and a highlight of the museum.
