For those choosing to study in Mexico, a student visa is needed. Currently, this visa is applied for once you arrive in Mexico. The National Institute of Migration (INM) will need you to demonstrate that you are enrolled in a Mexican school or university and that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your time in Mexico. Be sure to speak with your host university, program provider, and/or home university advisor for help with translation and documentation if needed.
A Document Checklist:
- Your original, signed passport, which must have 6 months validity remaining post departure from Mexico.
- Official form, Solicitud de Tramite Migratorio (Request of Migratory Procedure) and one copy.
- A letter from your sponsor/host program.
- Letter of recommendation from Carnegie Mellon University.
- Letter from the accepted institution of study in Mexico, specifying the level, degree, length, and area(s) of study intended.
- Letter from the student, in Spanish, directed to the National Institute of Migration, stating the level, degree, length, and area(s) of study and a which institution they will be visiting.
- Proof of means of support, allowing (approximately $540) for each month of the academic year
- If an attorney is being used or consulted to assist your application, the INM will need to see information and documentation authenticating the firm and its involvement.
