All foreigners intending to enter Italy must provide the documentation required to justify the reasons and duration of their stay as well as, in some prescribed cases, the availability of adequate economic means and lodging. As a student, you will need a visa, application for which can be made at the Italian Diplomatic and Consular Representations in your country of residence. It is recommended to check with the program or istitution with which you will be studying, as well as with your local Italian Consulate or Embassy. As with other countries, the Italian Consulates and Embassy are jurisdictional, so be sure to apply through your local consulate or embassy.
A Document Checklist:
- Your original, signed passport, which must have 6 months validity remaining post departure from Italy.
- A visa application form
- One recent passport style photo
- Proof of means of support, allowing (approximately $540) for each month of the academic year. This can be proven with the following documentation:
- Proof of personal or family resources
- Guarantee of financial resources by accredited institutions or agencies
- Declaration of availability of lodging
Helpful Hints:
- Verify with your program provider and/or foreign institution that you have the correct documentation, visa status, etc to study as well as allow for time to and from your host country.
- For more information on consular locations, as well as visa fees, types and costs, visit the Embassy of Italy visa Information page at: http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp
- When entering Italy, even if you have already obtained a visa, the border authorities are authorized to verify the documentation used to apply for your visa.
- When the application is complete, you will receive correspondence from the issuing authority as to the rights and obligations associated with your visa, such as “Permesso di soggiorno” (permission to stay) or the issuance of a “Dichiarazione di presenza” (statement of presence).
The information above is not comprehensive and may not reflect recent policy changes. For the most current and complete visa information please contact the embassy of the country to which you are traveling. Please contact a study abroad advisor with any questions or for a letter of support from the home institution verifying payment and ensuring that the student will return to the U.S. to complete his degree.
