Germany

Anyone who is going for study in Germany (high school, college or university) is required to obtain a residence permit. US citizens (as well as citizens of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, as well as EU member citizens) are able to travel to Germany without a visa and apply for the visa once they are in the country. Citizens of other countries must apply prior to entering Germany. This is an option for US citizens, if they would rather apply before they depart the United States. As with other countries, the German Embassy and consulates are jurisdictional so be sure to verify the location. Travelers can find the German Mission serving their location by visiting http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/missions/consulates.html. If you do decide to apply before leaving the US, you will need to apply in person.
