"So, what type of vegetarian are you?"

Vegetarians exclude animal products to varying degrees. The major types of vegetarians are:

Lacto-ovo-vegetarian

  • A lacto-ovo-vegetarian eats foods from the soil, as well as eggs ("ovo") and dairy ("lacto") products. Animal flesh from meat, fish, and poultry is avoided, however.
  • Most vegetarians in the United States of America are lacto-ovo-vegetarians.

Lacto-vegetarian

  • A lacto-vegetarian eats foods from the soil and dairy products, like milk, cheese, and yogurt. Eggs, and animal flesh from meat, fish, and poultry are avoided.

Vegan (pronounced VEE gun)

  • A vegan only eats food from the soil and strictly avoids all animal products including red meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products.
  • Vegans also avoid products that may contain derivatives of animal products such as casein, lactose, etc. A vegan readsfood labels very carefully.

Meat restrictor

  • A meat restrictor avoids red meat, but may eat fish and poultry.
  • Meat restrictors are not vegetarians in the true sense of the word, but could be described as being on the road toward vegetarianism.
