Sexual Health and Contraception
Students can be tested for Sexually Transmitted Diseases in the clinic.
We offer Chlamydia/GC, HIV, RPRs (syphillis), Hepatitis B & C, and Herpes testing. These tests are covered under most health insurance plans when symptoms are present. They are not always covered when the tests are done for screening purposes only. Check with your medical insurance plan to be sure.
If you are on the insurance contracted by Carnegie Mellon (currently Highmark PPO Blue), only Chlamydia and HIV are covered as screening tests. The costs for additional screening tests would be covered according to the deductible and coinsurance levels on your plan.
HIV Testing
Confidential tests for HIV are available to all students.
Confidential testing differs from anonymous testing in that it does require students to provide their name for testing purposes. However, the information is encoded in a random number assigned to the student and the test. All information is kept solely between the practitioner and the student.
A free test is available with a waiting period of approximately two weeks for the results. A rush service can be ordered for a twenty dollar fee ($20.00), allowing results to come back as soon as the next day. HIV testing requires both a pre-test counseling for risk assessment and blood testing, and post-test counseling, in which the results will be given in person. No Results will be given in written letters, emails or over the phone. All results must be received in persons.
