Urinary Tract Infections

A urinary tract infection can occur anywhere in the urinary tract (the parts of the body that form and excrete urine). Sometimes bacteria gets into the urinary tract and causes an infection. Women are more often affected than men.

Symptoms of a Urinary Tract Infection (Cystitis) are:

  • A frequent urge to urinate.
  • Pain in the lower abdomen or pubic area and pain when urinating.
  • Blood in the urine.
  • A general feeling of tiredness and slight fever.

Treatment Includes:

  • A visit to a medical facility.
  • Drink one 8 oz. glass of water every hour for a 12 hour period.
  • Drink plenty of apple cider, cranberry, apple, or apricot juice.
  • You may have coffee, tea, or milk in moderation.
  • Avoid citrus juice, alcoholic or carbonated beverages (soda pop)

Pyelonephritis

Pyelonephritis (infection of the kidneys) is a serious problem and can cause the same symptoms as cystitis plus the following:

  • Pain in the back or side
  • High fever and chills
    • Nausea and vomiting

Treatment:

  • Be seen at a medical facility as soon as possible

Tips for Preventing Urinary Tract Infections:

  • Females should wash the genital area from front to back and wipe from front to back after urinating or having a bowel movement.
  • Females should urinate after having intercourse.
  • Do not delay urination. When you have the urge to urinate, do so as soon as possible.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to keep the urine dilute.
