Sudden disruption of the brain's normal electrical activities by injury, disease, fever, or infection can cause a seizure (convulsion). Persons with a chronic condition called EPILEPSY are usually controlled by medication but may have a seizure at times. Those persons often will have an AURA before the seizure and tell you what is going to occur.

An AURA can be:

  • An unusual sensation or feeling or a visual hallucination

A Seizure can be:

  • A mild blackout
  • Uncontrolled muscular contractions lasting several minutes

What to Do:

  • Do not restrain or hold person
  • Do not place anything between the victim's teeth
  • Remove any nearby objects that might cause injury
  • Cushion the victim's head using folded clothing or a small pillow
  • Call Campus Police at 8-2323
  • Stay with victim until medical help arrives. The victim may be confused and disoriented when the seizure is over
