Diabetic Emergencies

All individuals with diabetes must monitor their diet and exercise. If the person is insulin dependent and does not control their diet or exercise, an diabetic emergency can occur.

Signs and Symptoms are:

  • Changes in level of consciousness
  • Rapid breathing and pulse
  • Feeling and looking ill

Insulin Reaction (insulin shock or hypoglycemia):

  • Occurs several hours after eating
  • Can occur after excessive exercise

Symptoms

  • Nervousness
  • Feelings of hunger
  • Confusion
  • Cold and clammy skin
  • Loss of consciousness is possible
  • Apprehension
  • Change of personality and uncooperativeness

Treatment:

  • Identify the problem
  • Try to get the person to take fruit juices, candy or sugar containing drinks or obtain the person's glucagon if available
  • Stay with the person
  • Seek medical assistance. Call 911 or Campus Police at 8-2323.
