Shock
Shock is a condition that compromises the circulatory system, resulting in inadequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients to vital organs. Shock may result from excessive loss of blood, extreme pain and/or fear. Shock may develop in any serious injury or illness.
Signs and signals of shock are:
- Restlessness and irritability
- Pale moist cool skin
- Rapid breathing
- Rapid pulse
- May be confused or lose consciousness
Caring for a victim of shock:
- Have the victim lie down
- Call Campus Police at 8-2323 if the incident occurs on campus of in a campus building. If the incident occurs off-campus, call 911.
- Remain calm and reassuring
- Check breathing
- Control external bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound
- Try to maintain normal body temperature (cover if patient is cool)
- Elevate the legs about 12 inches unless you suspect head, neck, back injuries or broken bones. If unsure, leave victim lying flat
- Do not give the victim any food or liquids
- Stay with victim until medical help arrives
