Shock

Shock is a condition that compromises the circulatory system, resulting in inadequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients to vital organs. Shock may result from excessive loss of blood, extreme pain and/or fear. Shock may develop in any serious injury or illness.

Signs and signals of shock are:

  • Restlessness and irritability
  • Pale moist cool skin
  • Rapid breathing
  • Rapid pulse
  • May be confused or lose consciousness

Caring for a victim of shock:

  • Have the victim lie down
  • Call Campus Police at 8-2323 if the incident occurs on campus of in a campus building. If the incident occurs off-campus, call 911.
  • Remain calm and reassuring
  • Check breathing
  • Control external bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound
  • Try to maintain normal body temperature (cover if patient is cool)
  • Elevate the legs about 12 inches unless you suspect head, neck, back injuries or broken bones. If unsure, leave victim lying flat
  • Do not give the victim any food or liquids
  • Stay with victim until medical help arrives
