Transitional Coverage
Can I come onto the insurance plan early, or extend the plan after I graduate?
Our medical insurance plans run August 1 through July 31 each enrollment year. If you were eligible to enroll in the plan, you are always eligible to remain enrolled through July 31, regardless of whether or not you remain a student. But, if you do graduate prior to July 31, you are not eligible to extend the coverage past July 31..
For details regarding eligibility of enrollment in the medical insurance, or in the optional dental and vision plans, review the Student Insurance Policy.
If I can't come onto the plans contracted by Carnegie Mellon, what do you recommend I do?
You can contact the Alumni Office. This office offers temporary insurance for former students.
If you are/were enrolled on Carnegie Mellon's contracted insurance, currently through Highmark, contact them at 1-800-472-1506 to inquire about self-purchased plans. You can also visit a Highmark Direct Store to discuss insurance options with licensed professionals in person.
You can contact Student Benefits International; they also offer temporary insurance for students.
There are MANY additional insurance companies that offer temporary insurance. A search of the internet will provide more options.
