I am not enrolled on the medical insurance contracted through Student Health Services. Can I still use the Student Health Clinic, and how will the charging work?

Any student can use the clinic, regardless of the student’s insurance plan. For illness or injury visits, the consultation with the clinic staff is free, again regardless of the insurance plan of the student.

Fees can be generated if additional services are provided, or for preventative services. For students on the insurance contracted by Carnegie Mellon, most of the fees (except labwork, prescription, massage) are covered in full by the insurance. For students not on the contracted insurance, fees are charged to the student’s HUB account. Students are given a copy of their sign-in sheet with the fees listed, and that sheet can be used as a receipt for reimbursement. The student submits the claim to their own insurance company for reimbursement.

Labwork usually generates a fee. Students should present their insurance card (whether they are on the contracted plan through Carnegie Mellon or are on some other plan) when any labwork is done. The clinic can then instruct the lab to bill the insurance company directly for that particular service.

Remember, always bring your insurance card with you when you visit the clinic or any health care provider.
